If you’re eligible for your mobile smartphone upgrade right now, it’s a tough time to make a move. And it might be better to wait.
I am a Verizon Wireless customer which offers a terrific variety of 3G to choose from. 3G Android phones with brilliant AMOLED displays are very tempting.
My advice? Wait to see what smartphones 4G are like ( Verizon Wireless just switched on its much faster 4G service in the Boston area and promises phones first thing in the new year).
After all, Verizon’s contracts mean you’re stuck with the 3G phone for a year to a year and half unless you want to pay upward of $600 for undiscounted new phone. Verizon also isn’t discouraging teasing you that it might get the long overdue iPhone.
My strategy is wait for 4G phones and hope they are as nice as some of the 3G Android phones. This assumes, of course, the 4G phones are also 3G compatible.
That’s because I am still a couple of towns away from Verizon’s 4G service so I’ll need 3G until it does. But I’ll be ready. A 4G iPhone would be nice.

I found my DroidX got on the net very rapidly in Target, Natick, which I’m told had Verizon’s 4G or LTE…
You’re saying some of the 3G Droids are 4G compatible?
