Simmy, thanks for the note. We adored Jorge, but I am reluctant to send him my post even though things surprisingly seem free and easy in Cuba. But maybe I should...don't want to get him in trouble...what do you think?

We just found your fantastic article on your April visit to Cuba. We returned this past Monday from Cuba. Jorge was our guide and he made thr trip for us

Thank you John for your beautiful report on Cuban visit. We just returned and found your article after searching for "Jorge Perez Soria (on Google) who was also our fantastic guide! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed your
clear, accurate descriptions and sensitive insights. We hope one day, soon, Jorge will be able to attend a baseball game with you in Boston and then come to NYC so we can show him around!
Muchas gracias.

No discussion because maybe we all intuitively feared we knew that is exactly how it would go down.

It is a lousy deal, Bill. In the final analysis, the embargo is a response to the politically powerful in South Florida. At the same time, Castro has been a disaster for Cuba....he has single-handedly seen to Cuba's near complete isolation in the Western Hemisphere. The good news is that it is beginning to open up as Castro fades into the sunset.

Further proof that embargoes almost never achieve their stated goals (South African apartheid's collapse was probably due to the embargo).
Embargoes do achieve two things. They usually placate a domestic constituency, dissuading them from demanding war (That's one of the few benefits of the U.S. led embargo against Iran). And they achieve the misery of a large portion of the poorest people in the country toward which the embargo is aimed. Seems like a lousy deal.

John pretty good article and balanced couple of things stood out for me, My family was against Batista as stated in your article Cuba was poor but in 1959 had highest living standard for Latin America. In the last 52 years other countries in Latin America diversified their economy while Cuba remained in Limbo, The quote by FDR " American would do anything for Latin American except learn anything about them"... Money in suitcases John please according to Tom Brokaw his parents generation was the best generation in US History, I believe my parents generation is the best generation in Cuban history that came to this great country with nothing, My father washed dishes, picked tomatoes and my mother worked as a maid in a hotel, thanks to them we have better life, Cuban American that Fidel refers as Mafia, Worms mercenary are the first migrants to USA that gained economic and political power in the first generations, as well demonstrated with 3 Cuban American elected USA senate, congressmen, captains of industry an US ambassador representing with pride this great nation Yes the Soviet bought the sugar above market price, Cuba paid as being Russians mercenaries, Cuban fought Somalia, Ethiopia, Congo Vietnam, tried to spread revolution to all of Latin America violently, Like the ex president of El Salvador told Fidel in One of Latin Leaders conference how he was responsible for all the dead in his country, 70% of Cuban are for Fidel? why there are no elections? in the book "Last Days Of Fidel" by Andres Oppenheimer Castro advised Daniel Ortega not to hold elections in Nicaragua, he did this strongly! when he was pressured by Reagan Administration as you know he lost election to Violeta Chamorro, John you misquoted me concerning Cuba's education and health care, professionals rather work as taxi drivers than in their fields an Cuba health care leaves much to be desired, I Cuba best health care is for foreigner who can pay with hard currency not for the natives looking forward to seeing you guys again!! Un Abrazo!! in English Hugs!
